How To Select A Good Web Host

One of the first decisions a web business needs to make is which web host to pick. While it is possible to host a site on your own server, the amount of technical expertise required to do so is quite high. The majority of web businesses will therefore host their websites using the services of a professional web host. On this page, I will be discussing some of the criteria I use for selecting top web hosting services.

It used to be that web hosting could be quite costly. However, due to better technologies and more competition, the price of web hosting has fallen drastically in the last 10 years. Because web hosting is so affordable these days, you should not use price as a deciding factor in selecting a host. It’s not a good idea to select the least expensive host if all you save is a few bucks a month, especially considering that you may end up using an inferior host.

A lot of web hosts today offer hosting plans that have no restrictions on bandwidth or disk space used. This may sound like a great deal, but unless you are operating a very, very large site, you will probably have more than enough space with most hosting plans out there. In most cases, I believe the majority of businesses need not worry too much about bandwidth and disk space when selecting a host.

What then, should you look for in a host? In my opinion, two things are the most important.

The first is good customer support. Things can and do go wrong quite often with web businesses, and you want a company that will offer support 24 hours by phone. It is especially important that the technical support staff is competent and capable of dealing with complex issues quickly.

A second feature I find important is a quality control panel that is intuitive and easy to use. The majority of hosts now allow you to do a lot of things with your account, like operate multiple domains and add shopping carts or blogs. Nevertheless, setting up such features can be a headache unless you have a good control panel. Most hosts will allow you to look at “demo” control panels and it is definitely worth it to spend a few minutes making sure that the control panel is easy to use.
